The Y3P Challenge!

At the start of the year I uploaded a post entiltled A statement of intent for 2011!, within that statement I announced that I would attempt the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge this year! It is now exactly 2 months until I follow through on that statement and make my first attempt at the challenge. It is a challenge that appeals to many in the outdoor world, and is a good entrance point for those who fancy a crack at some of the harder national outdoor challenges, that said the Y3P offers a unique and tough challenge all of its own. For those that have never heard of the Y3P, or those that might be interested in the challenge for themselves you can find some details about it below. I am now thoroughly focused and looking forward to my challenge in July 2011 and of course will be blogging all about the challenge right here on my blog, (even if I fail in my attempt)!

Y3P details

The Y3P
A 25 mile circular challenge walk, the Three Peaks of Yorkshire normally starts and finishes at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, visiting the three highest peaks in Yorkshire – Pen-y-ghent (691m), Whernside (728m), and Ingleborough (723m) – in that order. The total distance may vary slightly, as there are a few minor route options, but for most the walk will be just under 25 miles, visiting Ribblehead and Chepel-Le-Dale.

Although walkers will often not be too far from civilisation, this long walk is still demanding, and is not a waymarked route. Map and compass skills will be required, especially when navigating over the Moss, and on the summits if visibility is poor. The total climb is some 5,200 feet, and the footpaths can be very wet and boggy in some places, rugged and rocky in others. Some sections are on fast country roads.

This walking challenge makes excellent training for bigger and longer challenges, such as the national Three Peaks of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon.
